Overview

Log parser is a powerful, versatile tool that provides universal query access to text-based data such as log files, XML files and CSV files, as well as key data sources on the Windows® operating system such as the Event Log, the Registry, the file system, and Active Directory®.

You tell Log Parser what information you need and how you want it processed. The results of your query can be custom-formatted in text based output, or they can be persisted to more specialty targets like SQL, SYSLOG, or a chart. Most software is designed to accomplish a limited number of specific tasks. Log Parser is different... the number of ways it can be used is limited only by the needs and imagination of the user. The world is your database with Log Parser.

You can discuss Log Parser in the iis.net forums here: http://forums.iis.net/default.aspx?GroupID=51

Features

  • Build simple to complex SQL-queries against many data sources
  • Supports all IIS log types, including W3C Extended (default)
  • Supports reading Windows Event Viewer such as System, Application, and Security
  • Has custom functions not available in T-Sql
  • Interfaces with SQL Server for uploading data directly from the Log Parser command
  • Support for many different output types, including charts, HTML, and much more
  • Works from local command-prompt or works remotely

Benefits

The benefits to this tool are much too high to outline.  However, the top of the list are the following:

  • The tool is free and community supported (www.logparser.com)
  • Works with almost any data, and almost any data repository
  • Does not require Administrator privaleges (the data that is accessed, though, might require administrator privileges)

Requirements

Log Parser works with operating systems Windows 2000 and higher.  It comes in two interfaces:

  1. Command prompt (LogParser.exe)
  2. COM\DCOM interface (LogParser.dll)

Pros This command-line tool is an excellent resource, if you can build a SQL query, you can use this tool. * pull information from Event logs, IIS logs, tracking logs, and can be configured to pull from virtually any text file format. * run in scripts to generate reports and graphics
Cons No longer supported by Microsoft. No new upgrades to support (like the newer Charting tools).
Conclusion Use this tool to generate scheduled reports, pull detailed information from log files (IIS, Events, etc.) or charts and graphs without using dedicated tools. http://www.ericwoodford.com/technical/logparser
