Overview

The new remote administration tool for IIS 7.0 provides end users and administrators with a way to remotely manage IIS 7.0 servers from Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The tool provides administrators and users with a familiar user interface to manage and configure their servers. A server administrator can perform almost any task that they could while sitting in front
of the server itself and site and application owners can modify and view settings that have been delegated to them by the server administrator.

For additional support information, go to http://support.microsoft.com.

Features

  • Remotely manage IIS 7.0 from Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
  • Connect directly to a server, an individual site, or an application.
  • View your remote site/application content directly from within the tool.
  • Installs even when you don’t have IIS 7.0 on the local machine.
  • Allows multiple simultaneous connections to servers, sites and applications.

Benefits

  • Manage IIS 7.0 servers remotely.
  • Allows site/application owners to connect to and manger their site directly – no longer having to call the server admin.
  • Familiar and easy to use administration tool.
  • Standalone install – no need to install the full IIS server on your local machine in order to manage a remote machine.
  • Easily manage multiple servers, sites and applications.

Requirements

The following prerequisites must be fulfilled in order to install Remote Manager on Windows Vista:

  • Note:  See http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/02/11/windows-vista-sp1-availability-for-technical-customers.aspx for current information on Windows Vista Service Pack 1 availability.
  • You must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 installed.
  • You must have the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or greater installed
  • You must have the Internet Information Services 7.0 Management Console installed

Pros * Easy to use * Allows for exact same management on a remote machine, as on the server itself * Customizable (Downloads new components, that server has but remote machine doesn't)
Cons * Not so many security options * Every site has the same security options for each user assigned to it
Conclusion This application allows you to manage an IIS 7 from abroad, assuming you've done portforwarding correctly. If the server has some components (Like URL rewrite, or FTP for IIS 7), the client will prompt to download these components and allow for management of said components on the remote machine. . Truly a masterpiece of management

Pros
Cons
Conclusion Its interesting that, from what I've read, IIS 7.0 is not avaliable for Windows Server 2003. So how can the IIS 7.0 Manager be installed on Windows Server 2003?

Pros I don't know - it would not install
Cons Won't install on Windows 7 clients
Conclusion I believe MS has an interest in developers working with the Windows 7 beta, so it's best to minimize any negative aspects of running it. I would also strongly supect that it's unlikely there are any significant technical issues with the IIS 7 Manager operating on Win 7 clients. It is probably just a matter of changing the configuration check in the install and doing a few hours of testing. We'll gladly take the risk of any compatibility issues. This isn't a 747, it's a developer's tool!

Pros Does what it needs to do, and it's the way to do it.
Cons Won't install on the Windows 7 RC. You need to work around it, but then it seems to work great.
Conclusion If you use Orca to remove the dependency check for the operating system, the installer will work without a problem, and you'll be able to use the app as intended.
